In the first head illustration of people with different hair, variety of line and expressive line variety is used to give personality to the hair of these individual drawings. As an overall piece, the individuals are united by the common use of expressive line in all their hair.
In the second image, first to the left, there is curved line in the headphones. Each headphone is manufactured the same way, therefore has the same lines, all brought to unity through repetition in this piece.
In the third image, second from the left, there is a train track with rocks and plants surrounding it and trees and sky above. All objects outlined here demonstrate variety of line. The metal train track shows a straight bold and heavy line. The outline of the rocks shows jagged fast and blended lines. The two different weeds as well as the lines between the sky and trees above shows curved and taught line. There is high contrast line between the trees and the sky.
In the fourth image, first from the left on the bottom row, a peruvian tapestry displays clear use of line location, direction, and different line types to make a design. This design achieves unity through the use of repeating lines but also balances the design with varying lines. For example, the juxtaposition of zig-zag lines with straight lines, and of course, varying colors.
In the fifth image, an office shows straight lines. The architects of this building used lines to create repetition and unity but had no control over the use of the lights within it. The photographer of this image however, noted the beauty in the variety that the random clusters of lights, people working late, created.
In the final image, a cut off tree trunk shows curved lines, taught lines, and possibly fine and spreading lines. The curved lines come from the tree rings and the taught lines run in the opposite direction of the curved rings and are much more bold and heavy. There is unity and variety in this piece. Variety with the lines, and unity with the direction, all spreading or coming to the center of the tree trunk.
